Fairbanks Morse, renowned for its submarine engines, ventured into locomotives, powering half of World War II's U.S. Navy submarines with its reliable opposed-piston diesel engine. This unique engine, with pistons at both ends of each cylinder and no valves or cylinder heads, offered fewer moving parts, swift acceleration, and double the horsepower per cylinder compared to conventional motors. In 1953, the Trainmaster, FM's most powerful single-motored diesel locomotive, debuted, boasting a robust body and bold colors. Despite its initial success, the opposed-piston engine proved challenging for locomotive use due to harsh railroad conditions, oil leakage, and complex maintenance. However, in the O gauge realm, the Trainmaster remains a beloved engine, with the Premier Trainmaster offering digital sound, slow speed capability, and variable smoke output, making it the most accurate Trainmaster model for O gauge enthusiasts.
